Optimizing a method, Introduction

Abstract The wishes and demands of the customer are the starting point for optimizing a method.

Several aspects of a method can be optimized, these include:

• sample pre-treatment, to achieve for example the largest (relative) enrichment of the analytes
• detection conditions, to maximize for example the selectivity or the sensitivity
• the selectivity of the separation, to maximize for example the resolution (between the two least-separated peaks)
• the column system, to minimize for example the analysis time.

This chapter has been written by Peter Schoenmakers, Stella Brudin and Peter Pruim.
