Abstract Although the principle of the rapid injection method for large volume sampling is extremely simple, a number of parameters have to be optimized before a large volume injection can be performed successfully.

The parameters that require some consideration are:
- Choice of the packing material,
- Optimization of the splitless transfer and determination of the inertness of the packing material,
- Determination of the maximum sample volume that can be accommodated by the packed bed,
- Determination of the solvent-elimination time.
