Abstract Split injection refers to a technique in which a liquid or vapor sample is significantly reduced in volume by removing most of the sample material during the short time in between ejection from a syringe or other sampling device and the sample entering a capillary gas chromatographic column. Due to its seeming simplicity, split injection is the most commonly used technique for introducing samples into capillary columns and most chromatographers start by learning how to perform split injection. While easy to learn, split injection may be difficult to master. As seen in this chapter there is much chemistry underlying a seemingly simple process.
